Gordie Meyer Memorial and Dedication of the "Meyer Prairie"

Join us in honoring our friend and colleague Gordie Meyer for his years of dedication to conservation, hunting, fishing, and the great out of doors.

Gordie, who passed away in June of 2007, worked his entire life to protect, enhance, and improve the lands, waters, and wetlands that he loved. Whether on the hunting land with his friends, relatives, hunting dog Jack, and trusted gun or at the State Capitol talking to Legislators and administration folks about conservation and the environment Gordie got his point across and left a lasting impression and legacy for future generations through his actions.

Join us as we celebrate the life of Gordie Meyer and dedication of the "Meyer Prairie" as part of the Vermillion River Wildlife Management Area.

Directions to the property:

From Highway 52 get off on Co. Rd. 46 go west. Take immeidate left on Clayton Ave. (Hwy 81). In 1/2 mile west on 17oth Street. Go 2 miles to Annette Ave. (Gun Range Sign) and turn south. Proceed 1 1/2 miles, large radio tower should be on your left.

From the West: Take Co. Rd. 46 east to Station Trail. Follow approximately 2 miles until it comes to a T. Turn right (Annette Ave) and follow 1 mile.

Minnesota State High School Clay Target League, 2010

In a time and an economy where every school program is under scrutiny, surprisingly one new program is flourishing. That program is the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL).

This is a “Virtual League” that allows schools and students from across the state to compete with one another without incurring travel time or expense. Students shoot at their local gun club or shooting range and email the scores to the MSHSCTL who then post the scores on the MSHSCTL website.

The program got its start in 2001 at the Plymouth Gun Club. A group of members were discussing the future of the club. New housing developments were springing up around the 20 acre club and the Shooting Range Protection Bill had not yet become law.

A hasty survey was conducted and it was determined the average age of the Gun Club members was approximately 53 years old. It became apparent that unless something was done to attract younger members, the club’s future could very well be in jeopardy.

Jim Sable was named Youth Program Director and given the responsibility of developing objectives, strategies and tactics for attracting young people to the club. It was quickly determined that the Plymouth Gun Club was not unique in the situation of an aging membership.

This year's Annual Assembly will be held in Austin, Minnesota at the Holiday Inn.

Corn Crowds Out Wildlife in Prairie Pothole Region

Study shows how government incentives are driving corn ethanol expansion, impacting wildlife

Ann Arbor, MI – A University of Michigan study released today shows how government incentives

for corn ethanol are driving farmers to shift land into corn production, resulting in significant
decreases in grassland bird populations throughout the fragile Prairie Pothole Region. The study,
conducted for the National Wildlife Federation by a team of graduate students from the University
of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, analyzes the current and potential
impacts of increased corn ethanol production on wildlife and habitat in the Prairie Pothole states
of Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

“Our research shows that native grassland is being converted into cropland at an alarming rate throughout the Prairie Pothole Region,” said Greg Fogel, study co‐author and MS/MPP candidate at the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and Environment and Ford School of Public Policy. “As a result, populations of sensitive wildlife species are declining significantly in areas with high increases in corn plantings.”
